Refinishing Parquet Floor
step 1 > remove all furniture, carpet, check for nails, staples, and any other strange objects that may be attached to your old parquet floors and then clean all the space where you plan on refinishing your parquet floors
step 2 > use a Drum Floor Sander "you can rent the drum floor sander at Home Depot or A specialized Floor store"with a sandpaper grit 36 Run the sander over the Parquet Wood floor - when you finish to run the floor sander on all parquet floors with the 36 grit sand paper you can go to the next step
step 3 > you now use a edger sander machine "you can also rent this floor sander at home depot or any specialized floor store" for the first run you will use 36 grit sandpaper you will use this floor sander on all edges of the parquet floors as the big machine can't get too close to the wall
step 4> you will now replace the sand paper from a 36 grit to a 80 grit sandpaper and repeat the step number 2. run the floor sander on the entirely floor space,"this step is for big drum sander"when you finish this go to next step
step 5 > you will now use a edger sander machine again but now with a sandpaper grit 80 as is the second time you apply the edger machine and you will need to make the floor surfaces to look as the same as possible, matching the area sanded by the big drum machine to edger sander machine and you can go to next step
step 6 > probably you are thinking you will use the big drum floor sander now but steady of running it now we will change the sandpaper grit from the edger floor sander to 100 grit and sand the floors over the edges again
step 7 > now you will use the big drum floor sander with a sandpaper grit 100,you will need to make as perfect as possible and also pay attention where you have used the edger machine so you can meet both floor areas equally.
step 8 > now you will use a tool that we call hand-scrap and you will look for areas when you may have some old stain marks that didn't came out using the sanders and normally it will in places you couldn't get with the floor sanders.
step 9 > now it's time to swipe all parquet floors and clean it for a closer inspection,if you have small gaps or nails holes you can fill in the wood with a special wood filler, you will be able to purchase wood filler with the same wood color
step 10 > at this point we will screen the parquet floors with a buffer and use a screen grit 100
step 11 > clean the parquet floors and inspect for any problems or small defects
step 12 > change the screen sand to 120 grit sand paper and start buffing all parquet floors again, then go the the next sanding step
step 13 > now we will swipe, clean, vacuum all parquet floors we do recommend get a old towel and apply paint thinner on it,don't make it wet but just a little humid and apply on all your parquet wood floors "apply this towel in only one direction so you can remove any existing dust from the parquet flooring
step 14 > now we will apply our first coat of polyurethane oil based or water based,is time also to choose if you want your parquet floors stained or natural finishing,if you choose for staining you can apply stain at this point and wait overnight so the stain gets dried and next day morning you can apply the first coat of oil based or water based polyurethane and don't forget also to choose how shine you wish to have your floors to be.you can choose:satin, semigloss, gloss & high gloss polyurethane.
step 15 > once you have applied the first coat of polyurethane you will have to wait about 12 hours for oil based polyurethane to be ready for the second coat and 40 to 50 minutes for water based polyurethane, once is dried is time to buffer the parquet floors again using a 120 grit screen, clean it after buffered, vacuum and then apply the second coat of polyurethane
step 16 > after the second coat of polyurethane is completely dried we can re-buffer and screen the parquet floors using 120 grit screen and apply our 3 coat of polyurethane. after about 20 hours you can move your furniture back in.
step 17 > if you did chose for water based polyurethane we do rec om end at least 4 coats of water based and you will screen, buff and clean the floors in between coats, you will be able to apply all 4 coats of water based in a single day. now for oil based poly you will have to wait 12 hours between coats and 20 hours after the last coat so you can step on the floors and move your stuff back into the house.
